The companies that want to buy American companies have, at times, seemed to care more about the currency, or at least not buying a company in a country whose currency is in decline, than they care about the actual target.

That's what it looks like now that a large German company and now a large Italian company have decided to start splurging. It is no coincidence that Deutsche Tel (NYSE: DT) (Cramer's Take) and Finmeccanica are exploring Sprint (NYSE: S) (Cramer's Take) and DRS (NYSE: DRS) (Cramer's Take). These companies are selling for something like 40% off for those bearing euros, and neither potential acquirer has debt problems or subprime issues, so the deals don't have big borrowing problems.

That's what I am thinking about when I see the better-than-expected figures today from Unilever (NYSE: UL) (Cramer's Take) and the other day from Nestle. These companies are part of that same groupthink. They are looking, no doubt, at a Heinz (NYSE: HNZ) (Cramer's Take) and thinking, "Wait, that's about a $10 billion company that's a global leader."

Or how about Allergan (NYSE: AGN) (Cramer's Take)? That was a $20 billion company that is down to $16 billion in dollars and about $12 billion as a translation to euros.

These are just too cheap for these companies to ignore, and much more of a healthy franchise than Sprint and a more important franchise than DRS.

We are all possessed right now with the "imminent" catastrophe of someone -- Citi (NYSE: C) (Cramer's Take), Cerberus, ResMed (NYSE: RMD) (Cramer's Take)? Somebody.

And those worries have continued to put a lid on many of our valuations. That, plus the subtle part of the slowdown -- botox use not accelerating that fast and breast augmentation slowing down in the U.S., as Allergan said to me last night on "Mad Money" -- makes people too nervous about some solid, non-financial situations.

Yesterday was really ugly. But this market doesn't have much of a memory. Go back over the franchises with great brands that have been crushed both here in stock and there in currency.

These are no longer going to be needles in a haystack.

Random musings: Like Quanta (NYSE: PWR) (Cramer's Take), a sleeper that I liked for utilities, Willbros (NYSE: WG) (Cramer's Take) -- a company that I was harping on as way too cheap and brought the CEO on "Mad Money" to bolster my case -- finally delivered the blowout I was looking for. I can understand anyone's desire to take profits on PWR or WG if you bought them at my direction, but these are really just "first good quarter" stocks, and I believe there is more ahead.

RELATED LINKS:
AGN's price target was also cut to $62 from $78. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on AGN.

After hitting a one-year high of $70.40 in January, the stock hit a one-year low of $52.26 last week. This morning, AGN opened at $55.65. So far today the stock has hit a low of $54.32 and a high of $56.45. As of 12:10, AGN is trading at $55.24, down $2.32 (-4.0%). The chart for AGN looks bearish but improving slightly, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a May bear-call credit spread above the $60 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in two weeks as long as AGN is below $60 at May expiration. Allergan would have to rise by more than 8% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

AGN hasn't been above $60 since February and has shown resistance around $60 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out on 5/7) are a positive surprise, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance AGN might find around $60, where it topped out in early April.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer.

DISCLOSURE: Mr. Archer owns and/or controls diversified portfolios of long and short stock and option positions that may include holdings in companies he writes about. This trade could be risky if the FDA finds trouble with one of AGN's medical products, but even if that happens, the stock could find some strong historical support around $105.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. Monday it would cut 10,000 jobs in a plan to lower costs by $500 million to $1 billion per year.

Wall Street had anticipated some amount of restructuring/job cuts, but the size appeared to be larger than many analysts had anticipated.

Simultaneously, Pfizer said it now expects 2007 EPS of $2.18 to $2.25 compared to the Reuters consensus I pitted my opinion against Cramers and "let it ride". I've just finished doing a cursory check on Bare Escentuals to see how they have fared. Suffice it to say, I hope no one sold their BARE shares based on Cramers advice.

The chart attached herein shall provide the whole story. My words are really not needed. Besides, I'm just a dude living up here in the woods and making cabinet panels for a living. What could I possibly know about investing? Bare Escentuals just went public in September of this year. Their performance thus far appears healthy to me.

The two stocks that Cramer liked in place of Bare Escentuals were Allergan (NYSE: AGN) and Medicis Pharmaceutical (NYSE: MRX). I will concede to Cramer that those two stocks have moved upward also. My point here is small and simple: You don't need a television crew and a stable of financial analysts to pick a winner now and then. If you have good instincts and the willingness to do your own research, you too can pick some stocks which will pay you to own. To quote my bald headed nemesis: "Do your homework."

You just have to consider that they could sell off a few days and the market may not just rubber band bounce.

He thinks Allergan (NYSE:AGN) is a real winner as the cosmetic and beauty play. It has BOTOX and recently sold off from $122 to $117, which may be a gift. He said to add 25% of a position at a time so you don't just get it all at one price in case it still has a bit more room down.

Cramer also reviewed the credit card sector: While he normally goes after MasterCard Inc. (NYSE:MA) as the mechanism, he thinks Capitol One (NYSE:ONE) is the one you go after as a tool.

He thinks COF is now a winner as the #4 credit card issuer. He thinks it is cheap and also well positioned as bank. Cramer also noted that it would be a winner in a weak dollar environment.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cramer on mergers, breast implants, and rims

Filed under: Analyst reports, Television, Allergan (AGN), Bausch and Lomb (BOL), Research in Motion (RIMM), Freep't McMoRan Copper (FCX)

On today's STOP TRADING! segment on CNBC; it's merger-mania these days and Jim Cramer had a lot to discuss.

Hard to find a common reason for all the mergers lately, he said. In the case of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX)'s recent bid for Phelps Dodge Corporation (NYSE:PD), the reason was so the smaller company had a safer, more reliable source of copper, among others.

Cramer thinks the overall market is undervalued with a 17 P-E and all the cash on the sidelines.

Cramer discussed breast implant approvals. He said Allergan, Inc. (NYSE:AGN) is a genius company doing everything right by focusing on the plastic surgery boom. It's profiting from Bausch & Lomb Inc. (NYSE:BOL) woes. Cramer thinks that AGN should have been higher anyway and this is just icing on the case. He thinks it is still too cheap and therefore a hold.

Today investors will analyze the data from the retail sector, they will look at some economic indicators for an idea about employment, inflation and productivity. Strong retail sales could help the market rally, as are the falling oil prices of this morning.

This morning, some retailers have already reported same-stores sales and the market is now looking for a 3.4% rise in October for the industry, or a 4.9% increases ex-Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT). Wal-Mart said last week it is expecting a 0.5% gain in same-store sales (sales at stores that have been open at least a year). It had just reported as expected.

Already reporting sales data this morning are Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ:COST) with a 4% rise, Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (NYSE:PIR) with an over 13% decline in sales, and American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NASDAQ:AEOS) that reported an 8% jump in same-store sales last night. AEOS also raised third-quarter earnings guidance. The stock might still be under pressure as some were expecting a 10% rise in sales. Walgreen Co. (NYSE:WAG) Oct same-store sales rose 11.4% and J.C. Penney Co.'s (NYSE:JCP) sales rose 8.1%.

This morning, some economic data is also due out. First, weekly jobless claims will be released at 8:30, but investors are waiting the main job report tomorrow. Also at 8:30, third-quarter productivity and unit labor costs will be reported. Unit labor cost could give investors a better idea about inflation, so barring any surprises, this is the number to watch out for. Finally, at 10:00, September factory orders are due. The European Central Bank makes its decision on interest rate today.

(NASDAQ:BARE). He calls it a fad that isn't going anywhere, and says if you own it you should "ring the register." It was spun off by an LBO firm, but now it's too late; the company won't make you money. Cramer had regrets over this one: he didn't tell a caller on Friday to sell, and wished he had.

Better options if you want to capitalize on America's quest for eternal youth? Cramer likes Allergan, Inc. (NYSE:AGN) for its Botox and Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation (NYSE:MRX) for its competing product. He counselled against the big, luxury names in the space: Avon Products Group (AVP), The Estee Lauder Co. (NYSE:EL) or Revlon, Inc. (NYSE:REV). Cosmetic companies are unreliable to Cramer.

Cramer did say International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (NYSE:IFF) is a good alternative, even though it is close to a 52-week high. He thinks the company is much better with scents and steady end markets. Soon it will split into two businesses, he says, as it creates sweet ingredients that it sells to large companies like P&G. He said IFF only trades at 16x forward earnings and it has consistent 10% earnings growth. The best pick of the bunch? IFF, Cramer says.
